Welcome to the website for Jerry Day 2008 and info on the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater!
"Jerry Day is a civic and cultural event
that celebrates one of the greatest rock guitarists of all
time and San Francisco native son - Jerry Garcia. This
event captures the true spirit of Jerry Garcia as we
celebrate his legacy, the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, and
recognize his Excelsior roots. By uniting the diverse
communities of San Francisco through Jerry's music, we
are creating something extraordinary for Jerry's
childhood neighborhood - the Excelsior District, McLaren
Park, and the City and County of San Francisco."
"Happy Jerry Day to all!"
- San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom

About this year's performers . . .
Melvin Seals and JGB [Website]
Melvin Seals who had worked with Jerry for fifteen years formed JGB one year after JERRY GARCIA’S death on August 9, 1995. After touring America steadily from late 1996 through 1997, JGB released a live CD, “Welcome To Our World,” in February, 1998 on The House Of Blues Records label touring extensively ever since in keeping the music alive, as Keepers Of The Flame.
“I was standing behind this guy on the stage. He was the second keyboard player in Elvin’s band. This big guy, he was just playing a Fender Rhodes. But he was playing so tasty; I’m just standing behind him. It’s a pretty thick band, so figuring out just how to get in there was, I thought, the work of a good musician. He was just playing the tastiest little stuff. I thought, ‘this guy is just too much!’ I asked him what his name was. He said, ‘Melvin Seals’.” Jerry Garcia, on meeting Melvin Seals

Workingman's Ed [Website] [MySpace]
Workingman's Ed, based out of the San Francisco Bay Area, pays homage to rock legends Jerry Garcia, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and the Grateful Dead. Fronted by Melvin Seals & JGB guitarist Stu Allen, along with guitarist Pat Nevins, Workingman's Ed is a high octane shot of love that will bring you back to the days of psychedelic light shows and swirling electric jams.

Stu Allen & Sandy Rothman Acoustic [Stu's Info]
Guitarist-singer Stu Allen, a native of Louisville, Kentucky, joined Melvin Seals & JGB in June 2004 and appears on the 'Keepers of the Flame' album. With his eagerness to improvise and his commitment to making every performance unique, Stu has made extensive contributions to the jam music scene. A resident of San Francisco, Stu continues to explore, experiment, create, and recreate, within a variety of musical styles. Sandy Rothman, mandolin, first started playing with Jerry many many years ago. Eventually he played in a band with Jerry called the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band and played their first show at the Fillmore in San Francisco on March 17, 1987. Here's Sandy on Jerry shortly after his passing: "Leave it to Jerry to keep on producing miracles even after he's gone from the physical realm. I'm sure many other people will also experience him in this way. Maybe this is truly the legacy of Garcia and his power to mediate and to unite people." Sandy and Stu met shortly after Jerry Day 2006. And now to the delight of many they are performing this year in an Acoustic Band. Also joining them will be Justin Purtill on Bass, Brian Godchaux on Fiddle, and Mark Corsolini on Drums. Welcome to a new evocation of JGAB.
